Welcome To Bengler Talk Thursday the 20th March @ Grafill

Bengler is perhaps best known for creating the social network Underskog but at this talk you will find there is a lot more to this Oslo based product development studio. Their work in creating social, digital experiences and in making data physical and interactive covers everything from owning your own 3-d printed piece of Norway (Terrafab) to a concept product that augments your fingers for better mobile text input with a “chording glove” (Chorderoy).

Exclusively for this evening at Grafill, Bengler will be bringing a very exciting new product they have been working on which is an amazing new 3-d printer. This beautiful Norwegian designed and engineered product is in prototype stage now with an April pre-order date.

So if you are thinking about buying a 3-d printer why not come along to the evening and see if a homegrown Norwegian product that has been built according to Dieter Rams design principles could be something for you.

And if you’re not shopping for a 3-d printer come along anyway and hear Bengler’s Even Westvang and Simen Svale Skogsrud chat product craft, development and experimentation at the edges of interactive design.

There will be an informal Q&A and drinks following the talk.

Even Westvang #

Even is a principal at Bengler specializing in concept development, user interface design and data visualisation.

Even works with clients and internal teams in shaping the products that Bengler builds. He believes that craft and material qualities are highly relevant terms when discussing how we build for digital media.

In order to argue for the value of making public data available he has self-initiated a series of experimental prototypes. These projects have been several times been featured in Norwegian national media and in international publications such as The Guardian in the UK and Fast Company in the US. This has also led him to give frequent public talks on topics like data visualization, social media and on data collection, retention and analysis.

Occasionally he teaches at the School of Design and Architecture (AHO) in Oslo – where he has insisted on doing a course called Internet Carpentry 101 on the material circumstances of the internet and how this informs how we may design for it.

Simen Svale Skogsrud #

Simen is a principal at Bengler specializing in product design, software architecture and broad spectrum tinkering.

Simen takes seemingly weird and out-there ideas, works out all the hard usability and engineering bits and puts them to work in the real world. To this end he nurtures a bestiary of oddball ideas in search of a purpose.

As a product designer, Simen's super-skill is understanding and anticipating motivation. As a coder, software architect and hardware hacker, he contributes in all levels of product development, yet his most important work is accomplished with a team, a whiteboard and a pot of coffee.

Simen has worked as an award-winning television producer (Gullruten 1996), interactive media artist, published novelist (Tiden 2004) and has created audio-visual installations for a couple of museums.

He loves to walk Kierkegaard-style. He clocks about 4.5 million steps a year.
